5 Great US Lakes For Watersports

There's no denying that watersports are popular, and for good reason! There is not much that comes closer to pure bliss than having fun and getting soaked at the same time. Whether you like water-skiing, jet-skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, diving, or anything else we have you covered! This is my personal list of 5 great US lakes for watersports. 

I'll go ahead and reveal here and now that the vast majority are located in the southwest since that's where your humble author hails from, but on the bright side, I can guarantee that they are quality choices. I've been to most of these places personally, and loved them. So without further adieu, let's check out 5 great US lakes for watersports.

1. Lake Texoma in Texas/Oklahoma

I've heard that everything is bigger in Texas, mostly from Texans. I was unsure what to think of that stereotype, but Lake Texoma unequivocally proves that statement right. This lake (technically a reservoir) is absolutely huge. No need to muscle a space for your boating, and that is a great thing!

My reasons for going here were not related to water sports, which is why it ranks so low on the list of five great US lakes for watersports. I did some camping and hiking during my time near the lake, but did see plenty of boating and fishing going on and made a mental note to return here someday.

Tons of space to do anything from skiing to kayaking might be enough to get it noticed, but what really puts it over the top is the fishing. I lamented that I didn't bring my pole because there were some fellas out there that were consistently reeling in whoppers. Lake Texoma, I will be back for you.

2. Blue Mesa Reservoir in Colorado

 Isn't it cold in Colorado? Heck yes, but a dip in some cold water can definitely get your circulatory system working. If you aren't into a chilly dip there are plenty of activities that you can get involved in. Relax on a pontoon and do some fishing. Can you tell I like fishing? It's therapeutic for me.

I'd suggest going here on a weekday if you're able because during the weekend the waters can get a bit crowded with speedboats and the like. Spend more time avoiding fellow vacationers by heading up here in the off-season. That type of logic applies anyways, but especially here.

3. Lake Powell in Arizona/Utah

Lake Powell is a cut above for many reasons, but the one that springs to the forefront of my mind is the view. The lake is absolutely huge and nicely nestled in red rock canyons that remind me of adventuring to the Grand Canyon. Even if you do nothing but look, you'll be glad just to witness its beauty.

Of course, if you want to do more than just look, that's much more ideal. Go kayaking, fishing, rent a boat, or take a tour of the surroundings. You can even rent a houseboat if you're planning on a more extended stay. There are so many offerings it's hard to list them all. Definitely worth a trip.

4. Lake Tahoe in California/Nevada

Straddling the border of California and Nevada is Lake Tahoe, a supreme vacation spot and of course another of our 5 great US lakes for watersports! Rent a boat for some water skiing experience, or experience the breathtaking nature of the miracle that is parasailing. Parasailing is worth the cost without a doubt.

Lake Tahoe is unlike any of our other 5 great US lakes for watersports, because of Nevada. There is a certain bling that comes from being able to walk in from the lake and hit a casino. You might even hit it big and be able to take as many parasailing rides as you like during your stay.

5. Lake Havasu in Arizona

Lake Havasu is a serious hot spot for watersports. Bring or rent a jetski, houseboat, motor boat, kayak, paddle boat, or just about anything else that you can imagine. It can be a bit overwhelming for a first-timer but after an extended stay, you will never want to leave the lake.

One interesting fact about Lake Havasu is that it features the London Bridge. Yup, the real London Bridge has been located here since 1968 so even if you aren't into sporting of some sort, history buffs can still get their fill here! Lake Havasu tops the list for good reason. The memories I have here are some of the strongest that I have. What a great way to spend those long-ago teenage years.

5 Great US Lakes For Watersports Conclusion

I guess this can be considered the west coast version of 5 Great US Lakes for Watersports, as I've not done much traveling on the east coast (yet). I'd be happy to come back with another version to keep our readers on the east coast covered, but it will probably be a long time in the making. 

If you only get one opportunity to visit a singular lake on this list I'd suggest Lake Havasu of course, but if you're looking for a more laidback pace it might not be a bad idea to check out Texoma. I'd encourage you to research these lakes further, this article is simply meant to bring them to your attention.

Oh, and if you're going to any of these places it might be a good idea to bring along a waterproof camera to capture all of the action.
